The hostess bar scene in Phnom Penh has expanded rapidly. What was once a modest collection of scattered bars has now grown into a sprawling network that extends well beyond the riverside area. Streets like 104 have long been popular with bar-goers, and while the bars on streets such as 130, 136, and 144 used to be concentrated near Sisowath Quay, today you can find bars stretching all the way to Street 19.

Current Bar Landscape: The area near the river has become a hotspot, with bars now densely packed. What used to be a mix of restaurants, guesthouses, and convenience stores on Street 136 has transformed into a block overwhelmed by hostess bars. Some original businesses remain, but they’re easily overshadowed by the neon lights and flashy signs.

Introducing Tiger 136: Tiger 136 is one of the newer additions to this vibrant scene. Located directly across from the Riverside Hotel on Street 136, it’s easy to overlook amidst the neon glow of the area. However, this bar has carved out its own niche with a distinctive vibe, including a flashy interior and a private area that sets it apart.

A Changing Bar Scene: There was a time when a handful of bars like Walkabout, Martini, Cathouse, Mikado, and Sophies were the main players in Phnom Penh’s nightlife. These spots were once the go-to places for anyone looking to enjoy the bar scene. As more bars began to open and attract crowds, the landscape shifted significantly.

Evolution of the Bar Scene: In the early days, I tried to catalog every bar in the city, but as the number of bars grew to nearly a hundred, that task became increasingly challenging. Maybe someday I’ll manage to visit every hostess bar in Phnom Penh in one go. Until then, I focus on covering the standout venues as well as some of the more average or less impressive spots to provide a well-rounded view. Running a successful hostess bar is more than just putting up a sign and hiring staff—it takes skill and effort.

What to Expect at Tiger 136: Tiger 136 stands out for having some of the most attractive staff in the area. The bar usually employs around ten women, with eight being particularly appealing to most patrons. The hostesses are generally in their early twenties, a notable contrast to some bars where the staff may be older.

Bar Layout and Atmosphere: The bar features a split-level design, with both upstairs and downstairs areas. Upon entering, you can choose to go down to the main bar or head up to the more private sections. The lower level is particularly eye-catching, with flashy gold and diamond-patterned walls that reflect red and yellow lights. There’s a raised platform where solo dancers occasionally perform. While it’s not a go-go bar, it offers a different vibe from other local bars.

Decor and Experience: The decor includes digital disco balls, screens, and strobe lights that create a vibrant atmosphere, reminiscent of something you might find in China rather than Japan or Singapore. The music is electronic, adding to the lively ambiance.

Upstairs Features: The upper level includes a spacious private karaoke room, bright but less ostentatious than the main bar area. If you’ve been to places like Wonderland, you’ll know what to expect, though there is an extra charge for using the karaoke room.

Pricing: Despite its elaborate decor and attractive staff, Tiger 136’s prices are fairly typical for the area. Drinks cost around $4 USD, while lady drinks are priced at $5 each. The bar fine is $10, and when hostesses choose to leave with customers, they generally ask for between $50 and $100.

Tiger 136 offers a unique experience with its distinct ambiance and lively atmosphere, making it a noteworthy spot in Phnom Penh’s evolving bar scene.
